Reception

Welcome to Reception

Mrs K Cairns – Class Teacher

Mrs M Mather – Teaching Assistant

We have fun and learn lots in Reception!

REAM Event

We held a very successful Raising Early Achievement in Maths event with the Reception children and their family members. Our Maths Ambassadors did a fantastic job at welcoming everyone and supporting with the activities.
Here are some of the comments from the adults who attended
‘Good interactive learning fun. We both enjoyed the maths activities.’
‘Lovely event, great range of activities, informative meeting.’
‘I now have an understanding of how her maths works in the school. We cannot wait to play the card game that we made.’
‘Brilliant event. Very helpful to understand how to support and engage at home.’
‘I would like to do this again.’
We will be holding another event in the Summer Term.

We are becoming amazing writers!

Have a look at some of our amazing writing. The children are using their phonic knowledge to write super sentences and some of them are even starting to write stories!

NSPCC Number Day

On Friday 2nd February we took part in lots of Maths activities for the NSPCC number day. We enjoyed decorating biscuits with numbers, making numicon flowers, playing snakes and ladders, designing superhero numbers and explored the composition of numbers using the numicon. We also worked our heart extremely hard by seeing how many different exercises we could do in 10 seconds. Lots of us wore clothes with numbers on as well!

Our Nativity Performance

The Reception staff were extremely proud of the Reception children for their amazing performance in their Nativity. They said their words loudly and clearly, their singing was beautiful and they confidently performed for their audience. A special well done to the children who were brave enough to sing solos or in small groups.

Author Visit

We enjoyed a visit from Toby Glover this term. He read some of his books, answered questions about being an author and how to become one. The children also discussed with him what they would like to be when they grow up. They were that excited by his stories that some of their grown ups even downloaded Toby’s books so that they could read and listen to them at home.

Road Safety

This half term we took part in a whole school road safety day. Our visitors showed us how to cross the road safely and we found out what a lollypop person does. Holly won the competition for her super fluorescent jacket. She received a fantastic prize. Well done Holly!

Bread Making, Writing and Soft play

The children in Reception have had a busy few weeks. We have made bread like the ‘Little Red Hen’ in the story we have been reading, produced some amazing writing and enjoyed their end of term treat on the soft play for receiving 31 leaves on the class tree.

Fish Investigation

As part of our animal topic the children in Reception have been learning about animals that live in the sea. Miss Waugh brought in two whole sea bream and the children loved being able to get involved and being hands-on so that they could experience things for themselves.

Many of the children had not seen a whole fish before. We encouraged them to look at the scales and patterns and then provided the opportunity for them to touch the scales and feel the texture. They talked about the different types of fins, such as the dorsal fin, which they learnt protects the fish from rolling in the water, and the caudal fin, which is the tail and helps to propel the fish through the water and enables it to swim. They also used the knives to cut off the fins, remove the eyes and open up the fish to look inside.

The children saw that the sea bream had a small white tongue and small, sharp teeth, which they use for crunching up barnacles and other small shellfish. They also saw that on either side of the fish’s head are gills, which they learned they have instead of lungs. They found out that these help the fish to ‘breathe’ under water by removing oxygen from the water. They also discussed the lateral line running down the length of the fish’s body, which is their ‘ears’ and helps the fish to detect movement and vibrations in the water.

It is not a stick

We combined our outdoor learning session with an art lesson and produced some fantastic work. First we read the story, ‘Not a stick’ by Antoinette Portis. Then we went outside to look for the perfect stick for our art work. The children then turned them into something else. There were some fantastic ideas!

Celebrating the Lunar New Year

Dancing with our school dragon and lion.

MVI_6555

MVI_6553

MVI_6554

We learned all about how Chinese people celebrate Lunar New Year. We tried noodles (some of us were brave enough to use chopsticks!), spring rolls and prawn crackers with sweet chilli sauce, made our own dancing dragons, made rabbits (because this year is the year of the rabbit) and we even wrote our names in Chinese. It was quite tricky but we did a fantastic job!

To celebrate the end of our Castle topic in Reception we held our very own medieval banquet. During the morning we prepared and made some food that the Kings and Queens would have eaten. We chopped vegetables to make vegetable soup and weighed our ingredients to make gingerbread. The children were announced as they entered the banquet and bowed/curtsied to our chosen King and Queen (King Jak and Queen Elena) They also took part in group dancing, partner dancing and playing games.
