Digital Leaders host e-safety workshops for parents

Thank-you to all parents who attended our e-safety workshops hosted by our Digital Leaders. We hope you enjoyed their presentation and the activities that you completed with your own children on Chromebooks afterwards. The children all responded positively to the sessions – sharing their delight in having protected time with their parents to enjoy their school work.

Parent voice:

‘It was brilliant to have some one on one time with my child to see what they have been doing in school.’

‘I’m really impressed with what they can achieve in technology – I’ve learned some things myself today!’

Teach Primary Article

Due to our work with NAACE, the National Association for Technology, our school has been featured in this quarter’s edition of Teach Primary magazine.

Here is a link to the online magazine:

Here is a direct link to the article detailing our work with NAACE:

As always, we are incredibly proud of the work that we do here at Forest View Primary School and we are thankful to all of the staff, pupils, parents/carers and other stakeholders for helping us to reach our STEM goals.

Year 6 Trip to The Word

On Tuesday 3rd October, Year 6 visited the word with Mrs. Waudby, Mrs. Cairns and Miss Prior.

As part of their computing curriculum, it is essential that children learn how to program and debug code using various different devices. Fortunately, they had the opportunity to explore the coding language of two different devices – the micro:bit and LEGO Spike Prime.

Children accessed MakeCode https://makecode.microbit.org/ (which they can also access from home, with permission from a parent/carer) and used the tutorials to develop their skills. By the end of the session, the children were fully engaged and some of them even wanted to put a micro:bit on their Christmas list! We will be using micro:bits in school in the near future. Additionally, if you are interested in purchasing one for your child, they currently cost around £20.

This academic year, a small group of year 5 and 6 children will be chosen to take part in the First LEGO League competition with other schools from South Tyneside. During their trip, children were introduced to the LEGO Spike Prime kit and the missions that they will have to complete as part of the competition. The children were enthused, engaged and excited!

Follow this link to find out more about the LEGO Game Board Missions in this year’s competition – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI_vz9YUw1g

Pupil/Staff Voice:

Leah – ‘It was fun making the robots.’

Connor – ‘It was good using my imagination to solve problems.’

Khloe – ‘I got to learn loads of new things.’

Joshua – ‘The LEGO was hard at first but then it got easier when I had completed a project and then I knew what I was doing.’

Lenica – ‘It was cool getting to control the LEGO with Bluetooth.’

Mrs. Waudby – ‘I was impressed by the use of technology and how interested the children were. I felt inspired and motivated by the First LEGO League videos and by watching the children interact with the robots. I really loved that the missions and resources were accessible for all of the children.’

NAACE Involvement

Due to our work with NAACE – the National Association for Technology – Forest View Primary School have been featured on their website.

Follow this link to read an article by David Williams that details our progress while planning our school improvements, using the Self-Review Framework and our final assessment by NAACE.

NAACE Assessment

Our aim at Forest View Primary School is to raise aspirations for our children and provide opportunities to enhance their learning through different experiences.

On January 18th, Philip Blackburn from NAACE (The National Association for Education Technology) came to visit our school to look at the way we use technology at Forest View. Philip worked alongside Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Simpson and Mrs. Cairns to evaluate our use of technology and he also spoke to some children, parents and governors. Philip was so impressed with our technology journey that our school has been awarded the prestigious NAACE Mark for Computing and Technology Excellence! You can view our school’s award in the school reception area.

We are so proud of the work that the children have done and of their positive attitudes towards technology!

Children in Need

As part of our Children in Need day, Year 4 wrote some poems about how we can help and support children who are less fortunate than they are.

As part of their Computing lessons, they worked on using green screen technology to add a Pudsey bear background to their video presentations.

Well done, year 4!

Anti-Bullying Week

As part of Anti-Bullying Week, Mrs. Hayward from ICT in Schools South Tyneside came to visit us at Forest View Primary School.

She delivered exciting e-safety and anti-bullying workshops for KS1, LKS2 and UKS2.

Key Stage 1 children enjoyed learning all about Smartie the Penguin and his SMART rules for staying safe and being respectful online.

Lower Key Stage 2 children enjoyed their workshop centred around the theme ‘Choose Kindness’. They learned about Cyberbullying and how to combat this by telling a trusted adult if they see or hear anything online that gives them ‘yucky feelings’.

Upper Key Stage 2 children joined a workshop called ‘Protect Your Privacy’.

The children considered what sort of content they might share online and why.

Children discovered that their information can be accessed by other, unwanted individuals if they do not share their content responsibly.

Mrs. Hayward reminded the children of permission and consent when sharing content of other people. The children then viewed different types of content and decided if: it was okay to share, not okay to share, or it was okay to share depending upon the intended audience.
